I hate when people say: "I prefer the original" - they're usually dicks, but the original Strawberry Letter 23 by Shuggie Otis is way better. People generally prefer the Brothers Johnson version mainly because it's the third track on the Jackie Brown soundtrack and it has the funky bass bit at the beginning. But the original got soul and that cannot be replicated anywhere. And it's Kenny Reeds tune in the New Deal video. I've had this conversation at hundreds of house parties so take my word for it and illegally download Inspiration Information, the album it features on, it's unreal.

Glad you like it.
It was the song of the summer for cruising home from work in Donegal on a sunny day. We even made a rule that it could not be played if it was cloudy. |

oh right, thanks, didn't even know it was a cover.
The original is good, i am a bit attached to the funky bass in the Brothers Johnson version at this stage though. |

Yeah, everybody is. It ususally depends on which version of a tune you grow to love first I think. I listened to the Shuggie Otis version before ever giving Jackie Brown a decent listen. It's the same with anything. I still prefer Nirvana's unplugged version of the Man Who Sold the World to Bowies original, even though I prefer Bowie's music much more. That tune actually turned me on to David Bowie in the first place. Music is strange. |
